Pop cul·ture

/päp ˈkəlCHər/
noun
modern popular culture transmitted via the mass media and aimed particularly at younger people.
“fashion, music, and the iconography of pop culture offered the perfect medium for profit”

What is Pop Culture?

Popular culture is generally recognized by members of a society as a set of practices, beliefs, and objects that are dominant or prevalent in a society at a given point in time. Popular culture also encompasses the activities and feelings produced as a result of interaction with these dominant objects.

What defines pop culture?

Popular culture is the set of practices, beliefs, and objects that embody the most broadly shared meanings of a social system. It includes media objects, entertainment and leisure, fashion and trends, and linguistic conventions, among other things. The most common forms of popular culture are movies, music, television, video games, sports, entertainment news, fashion, and various forms of technology. Some of us may be very selective in our consumption of popular culture, but it’s difficult to find someone who has not been touched by popular culture at all.

The study of popular culture is useful in many ways. To be more specific, this course has reached its three intended main ideas: what it means to be American, how to be more consumption-conscious, and how to apply these studies in our own lives.

Popular culture, or pop culture, (literally: “the culture of the people”) consists of the cultural elements that prevail (at least numerically) in any given society, mainly using the more popular media, in that society’s vernacular language and/or an established lingua franca.

It serves an inclusionary role in society as it unites the masses on ideals of acceptable forms of behavior. Along with forging a sense of identity which binds individuals to the greater society, consuming pop culture items often enhances an individual’s prestige in their peer group.
